Here are a few reasons veterinarians across Ontario choose Cassar CPA:
We know the cost structure of veterinary clinics inside out: anesthesia machines, surgical instruments, digital radiography, ultrasound, in-house lab analyzers, inventory of pharmaceuticals and vaccines, boarding setup, and how to apply Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) properly, for veterinary equipment, computers and practice-management hardware, so you recover costs the way CRA allows.
Most veterinary services are taxable for HST, not exempt. That matters. Once your clinic crosses the $30,000 small-supplier threshold, you have to register, charge HST on services and retail product sales, and you can claim input tax credits on rent, equipment, supplies, and overhead. We handle the coding, filings, and CRA reviews so refunds don’t get held up.
Running a veterinary practice means juggling patient billing, controlled-drug compliance, College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO) requirements, payroll for technicians and support staff, and significant capital purchases. From our Toronto and Oakville offices, you get attentive service and practical advice from a team that understands both the regulatory side and the day-to-day reality of animal care.
At Cassar CPA, we believe veterinary professionals deserve more than a year-end tax return. You deserve accountants who understand the cash flow of an animal hospital, the capital cost of digital imaging, inventory turnover on pharmaceuticals. That’s why we offer accounting firm services and tax specialist support designed for veterinarians, so you can focus on patient care while we look after the finances, compliance, and tax planning.
Here’s how Cassar CPA supports veterinary practices:
We’ll look at your current setup: sole proprietor vs Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation, clinic ownership structure, equipment list, staffing model (associates, RVTs, locums), inventory systems, retail sales mix, and your current tax position. From there we map out where you stand and where there’s room to keep more.
Buy or lease? How do you depreciate a renovated treatment area as a leasehold improvement? We work through the timing with you so capital decisions land where they should, on your tax return.
Bookkeeping, payroll for technicians and associates, supplier and pharmaceutical inventory tracking, financial statements, T1 personal and T2 corporate returns, HST filings, professional liability insurance, CVO licensing fees, all the line items that make up a real vet clinic’s books, handled.
We keep you current on changes to CRA rules, CCA classes, the AII phase-out timeline, the small business deduction, and record-keeping best practices, so you’re ready when CRA asks.

Yes. Most veterinary services and the retail products you sell at the clinic, food, parasiticides, supplements, accessories, are taxable for HST in Ontario. Once your taxable revenue crosses $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters, HST registration is mandatory. The upside is that you can then claim input tax credits on rent, equipment, utilities, software, and most operating expenses. We make sure the coding is right so refunds aren’t denied or delayed during a CRA review.
It depends on what you’re earning, how much you reinvest, and your long-term plan. Licensed veterinarians in Ontario can incorporate as a Veterinary Medicine Professional Corporation under the Veterinarians Act, with name approval and a Certificate of Authorization from the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO). The main reasons to incorporate are tax deferral (the combined Ontario corporate rate on the first $500,000 of active business income is 12.2% in 2026, dropping to 11.2% effective July 1, 2026, compared to a top personal marginal rate of 53.53%), and potential income-splitting flexibility. We model it for your specific numbers before recommending.
Most veterinary equipment, anesthesia machines, X-ray and ultrasound units, surgical instruments, in-clinic lab equipment, computers and practice-management hardware qualify for the CCA tax deduction. Timing a purchase before fiscal year-end and getting the asset available for use matters. We help you sort the class, the timing, and the documentation.
A few we see often: not registering for HST when revenue crosses the threshold; missing input tax credits on shared expenses; misclassifying associates as independent contractors when CRA considers them employees; mixing personal and clinic expenses; failing to plan years ahead for the 24-month QSBC purification test before a sale; and undocumented inventory write-downs. Each of these is fixable, but cheaper to prevent than to clean up during a CRA review.
